GIIA:
Global Initiative to Combat Islamophobia and Antisemitism
GIIA is a pioneering project that has evolved over several years to develop a global approach for addressing the roots of these twin forms of racism and their contemporary manifestations.
Efforts to combat islamophobia and antisemitism have traditionally been addressed separately, with distinct organizations, policies, and definitions tailored to each form of discrimination. These targeted approaches highlight the unique challenges faced by each community and reflect the importance of addressing their specific experiences.
GIIA explores how these forms of hatred intersect and identifies opportunities for collaboration and shared solutions, without diminishing the distinctiveness of each struggle. The persuasive power of solidarity is well established across a range of struggles for equality and justice.
The Global Initiative for Countering and Antisemitism (GIIA) was established to provide a common platform where both can be combatted through a unified approach. While respecting the unique history and experiences of each community, GIIA examines how antisemitism and islamophobia are interconnected, both historically and systemically. By fostering dialogue and critical analysis, it aims to support more effective responses to modern manifestations of both forms of discrimination, while maintaining sensitivity to the distinct needs of each group.
Through its work, GIIA seeks to provide a collaborative space for governments, human rights advocates, academics, and other stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and action. It aims to identify gaps and opportunities in addressing these prejudices, offering tools to complement existing initiatives while fostering solidarity and mutual respect.
GIIA classifies both Islamophobia and antisemitism as "twin challenges" — forms of racial discrimination that are deeply influenced by contemporary political and social developments. This recognition underscores the necessity of developing an international approach to combat these two forms of racism together.
The Granada Declaration on Combatting Islamophobia and Antisemitism
The GIIA initiative bases its framework on the principles of the Granada Declaration on Combatting Islamophobia and Antisemitism — a set of carefully crafted principles developed through consultative meetings by researchers, academics and policymakers with specialised expertise and experience in combatting antisemitism and Islamophobia.
The principles were developed during the 4th Annual Roundtable on Combatting Islamophobia and Antisemitism, held in Granada, Spain, in April 2025, with the final formulation prepared by New Ground Research. The GIIA operates on the foundational premise that struggles against Islamophobia and antisemitism are interconnected and should never be pitted against each other – though they can and often are addressed separately, with distinct, context-specific interventions.
Guiding Principles
At its core, the Granada Declaration is built on several foundational premises:
-
Islamophobia and antisemitism are interconnected struggles that should never be pitted against each other.
-
Both forms of racism are deeply rooted in historical discrimination and are amplified by contemporary political and social developments.
-
Context-specific interventions are essential, recognizing that while these challenges share commonalities, they also have distinct manifestations.
-
Combatting these forms of hate requires coordinated action across civil society, academia, government sectors, and international organizations.
-
Rejection of weaponization: Both Islamophobia and antisemitism must not be weaponized for political purposes or used to silence legitimate discourse.
Implementation & Partners
New Ground Research encourages organizations, institutions, governments, and civil society groups to integrate the Granada Declaration principles into their work. The Declaration serves as the guiding framework for all GIIA initiatives and partnerships.
